Tips for measuring atta
- Atta is light and airy, so how you fill the cup matters more than with sugar or rice. Spoon it into the cup and level it with a knife. Scooping straight from the bag packs it down and can add 15 to 20 g per cup.
- One cup of atta makes about 3 medium rotis (around 40 g of flour each). For a family of four eating 3 rotis each, knead about 4 cups, or 480 g.
- Supermarket wholemeal flour weighs about the same per cup as chakki atta, but it is coarser and drinks a little less water. See our soft roti with supermarket flour.

US cup or UK cup?
American recipes use a 240 ml cup; UK, Australian and most Pakistani measuring sets use a 250 ml metric cup. The difference is only about 4%, so it rarely matters for salan, but it does for cakes and mithai. A Pakistani steel katori is smaller again, usually 150 to 200 ml. See 1 katori in grams.
