Shopping halal abroad, calmly

In Pakistan you rarely think about halal at the shop. Abroad, a quick look at the label answers most questions: a certifier’s logo, then a short list of ingredients worth checking, such as gelatin, alcohol, carmine, animal rennet and a few E-numbers that can come from animals.

These guides explain what labels and ingredients mean and which questions to ask. They are not religious rulings: scholars differ on some points, such as gelatin, rennet and small amounts of alcohol in flavourings. For a ruling, ask a scholar you trust; to check a product or shop, ask its certifier.
