Make the tadka on medium heat in a small pan, with the extractor on high and a window open before you start. Add powdered chilli off the heat or with a splash of water so it doesn’t smoke. Never cover or disable the alarm; if the alarm is too close to the cooker, ask your landlord about a heat alarm for the kitchen.
