Pressure Cooker Whistles to Minutes
Recipes say “3 whistles”, but your Instant Pot wants minutes, or a recipe says “10 minutes” and you count whistles. Convert both ways, with typical times for daal, chana and meat.

Why whistles are only a rough guide
A whistle is steam escaping when pressure builds past the weight. How often it whistles depends on the size of the cooker, how full it is and how high the flame is. A 5-litre cooker on high can whistle every 90 seconds; on low it may take 5 minutes.
For long cooks like chana, rajma, mutton and paya, it is better to count minutes: let the first whistle come, lower the heat, and time it.
Safety
- Never fill a pressure cooker more than two thirds full, or half full for daal and beans that foam.
- Let the pressure drop by itself (natural release) for daal and beans.
- Check the gasket and the vent before every use.
